Should\u00a0the pandemic scenario take a turn to the worse in the second half of 2022, we will adjust our plans accordingly, to safeguard the safety of all participants. What is guaranteed, however, is that ECA 2022 will NOT be a hybrid event: either it will take place entirely as a physical conference (our current plan and by far the most likely scenario), or it will happen solely online (plan B if all else fails).<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, these are the fees for ECA 2022:<\/p>\n<p><em>EARLY BIRD<\/em>\u00a0(by 15 July 2022, midnight CEST)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Senior scholars\u00a0\u20ac 200<\/strong> (faculty members, active or retired, and anyone holding a PhD awarded before January 2022)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Junior researchers\u00a0\u20ac 100<\/strong> (undergraduates, PhD students and anyone holding a PhD awarded after January 2022)<\/p>\n<p><em>REGULAR<\/em>\u00a0(by 15 August 2022, midnight CEST)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Senior scholars\u00a0\u20ac 300<\/strong>\u00a0(faculty members, active or retired, and anyone holding a PhD awarded before January 2022)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Junior researchers\u00a0\u20ac 150<\/strong>\u00a0(undergraduates, PhD students and anyone holding a PhD awarded after January 2022)<\/p>\n<p>These\u00a0fees include conference material, 2 lunches, 5 coffee breaks, and administrative costs. A cultural tour is planned at an additional fee of \u20ac 20, as well as a conference dinner at an additional fee of \u20ac 40 (details below).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>REGISTRATION<\/h6>\n<p>Registering to ECA 2022 requires <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two mandatory steps<\/span>: (1) filling-in the <strong>online attendance form<\/strong>, and (2) <strong>paying the resulting fee via bank transfer<\/strong>. Failure to complete either of these steps by <em>August 15, 2022<\/em> will result in exclusion from the conference: in fact, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">after that date registration to ECA 2022 will no longer be possible<\/span> (which means that also <em>on-site registration is not allowed<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attendance form<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please go to <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/SHdjFFHRLXhuhW6H6\">https:\/\/forms.gle\/SHdjFFHRLXhuhW6H6<\/a> and fill in all the required fields: this will also let you know <em>the exact amount that you are supposed to pay for registration<\/em> (keep in mind that early bird fees are available only until July 15, 2022 at midnight, CEST). Once you have completed your attendance form, please make sure to pay your due fee as soon as possible. Once again, keep in mind that July 15, 2022 at midnight CEST is the deadline for early bird registration, whereas August 15, 2022 is the last day for registering at all.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Payment procedure (bank transfer)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The payment of the registration fee to the ECA 2022 conference must be done via bank transfer, using the following bank details:<\/p>\n<p>Account holder: Associazione Italiana di Scienze Cognitive (Italian Association of Cognitive Sciences)<\/p>\n<p>Bank: BPER<\/p>\n<p>Account ID number: 163-1648762<\/p>\n<p>IBAN code: IT64M0538703202000001648762<\/p>\n<p>BIC\/SWIFT code: BPMOIT22<\/p>\n<p>Reason: \u201cRegistration to ECA 2022, first name and surname\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fee for senior scholars (faculty members, active or retired, and anyone holding a PhD awarded before January 2022) is 200 \u20ac before July 15, 2022, and 300 \u20ac after; for junior researchers (undergraduates, PhD students and anyone holding a PhD awarded after January 2022), the fee is 100 \u20ac before July 15, 2022, and 150 \u20ac after. If any other additional fee is being paid at the time of registration, e.g. 20 \u20ac for the cultural tour and\/or 40 \u20ac for the social dinner (details below), the amount to pay must be updated accordingly and the additional services must be mentioned in the reason for payment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Important notice<\/span>: early bird fees are valid only <strong>before July 15, 2022<\/strong>, and all fees must be paid <strong>before August 15, 2022<\/strong>, without exception. After the latter date has expired, it will <em>no longer be possible to register to ECA 2022 or to any of its associated events<\/em> (including the cultural tour and the social dinner).<\/p>\n<p>Upon registration, the payment receipt <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must<\/span> be forwarded BOTH to the ECA 2022 Chair Fabio Paglieri (<a href=\"mailto:fabio.paglieri@gmail.com\">fabio.paglieri@gmail.com<\/a>) and to the AISC Treasurer Francesco Bianchini (<a href=\"mailto:francesco.bianchini@unibo.it\">francesco.bianchini@unibo.it<\/a>), mentioning \u201cPayment for ECA 2022, first name and surname\u201d in the subject of the message: this is MANDATORY in order to consider your registration to ECA 2022 <strong>successfully completed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are two examples of possible fess to be paid by ECA 2022 registrants and the correct payment reason to mention in their bank transfer.<\/p>\n<p><em>Janine Prompt, a PhD student, registers before July 15, 2022 and elects to participate also to the cultural tour, but not the social dinner; thus she pays 120 \u20ac (100 \u20ac for early bird registration as a junior researcher, plus 20 \u20ac for the cultural tour) and writes as reason \u201cRegistration to ECA 2022 and cultural tour, Janine Soon\u201d in her bank transfer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Instead, <em>Adam Slow, a faculty member, registers after July 15, 2022, and wants to take part in all the associated events: therefore, he pays 360 \u20ac (300 \u20ac for late registration as a senior scholar, plus 20 \u20ac for the cultural tour and 40 \u20ac for the social dinner) and writes as reason \u201cRegistration to ECA 2022 with cultural tour and social dinner, Adam Slow\u201d in his bank transfer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>ECA 2022 SOCIAL EVENTS<\/h6>\n<p><strong>CULTURAL TOUR, Sept 29\u00a0at 20:15\u00a0(20 \u20ac)<\/strong>: night visit to the Imperial Forums (Forum of Augustus and Forum of Caesar) with multimedia installations. A special audio system with disposable earphones will allow participants to listen to the music, special effects and the story narrated by a famous Italian science communicator and writer, Piero Angela, in 6 languages (Italian, English, French, Russian, Spanish and Japanese). Dinner is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> included, so participants are advised to eat before the event. Details here: https:\/\/www.viaggioneifori.it\/en\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOCIAL DINNER, Sept 30 around 20:30 (40 \u20ac)<\/strong>: final dinner of the conference at a restaurant in the city center. This will include also the proclamation and the official awarding of <em>the 2022 edition of the ECA Frans van Eemeren prize for Best Student Paper<\/em>; the prize will be delivered to the winner by the President of the jury, Prof. Ulrike Hahn. Details on the prize here: <a href=\"https:\/\/ecargument.org\/?page_id=434\">https:\/\/ecargument.org\/?page_id=434<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>RATIONALE<\/h6>\n<p>The European Conference on Argumentation (ECA) is a biennial international initiative aiming to consolidate and advance research on argumentation. Each edition is based in Europe, hence the \u201cEuropean\u201d label, yet these events welcome and regularly attract scholars from all around the globe. After three successful editions, in Lisbon (Portugal, 2015), Fribourg (Switzerland, 2017), and Groningen (The Netherlands, 2019), ECA will be hosted in 2022 by the University of Roma Tre, in Rome, Italy \u2013 postponed from 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Submissions are welcome on all aspects of argumentation theory, yet this edition will have a special focus on <strong>the cognitive dimension of social argumentation<\/strong>. Digital technologies have increased the scope and frequency of social dialogue, while at the same time deeply affecting its nature and argumentative function. This, in turn, has produced either unfettered enthusiasm for the positive potential of digital platforms to foster deliberative democracy, or urgent concerns about their negative impact on rational debate and the quality of information (e.g., the widespread alarm about fake news and their alleged influence on democratic processes). Both these types of reaction are partial and unbalanced: to achieve a better understanding of how the current information ecology is affecting social argumentation, we need to focus also on the cognitive dimension of our argumentative engagements, both online and offline.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas contributions on this topic are encouraged, individual submissions are not required to focus on the special theme of the conference. We invite submissions on all aspects of argumentation from any discipline, taking various approaches and dealing with various themes, among which:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>argumentative design<\/li>\n<li>argumentation schemes and patterns: analogy, practical argument, conduction, \u2026<\/li>\n<li>argumentation in special contexts: finance, medicine, law, policy making, academy, (social) media, \u2026<\/li>\n<li>argumentative strategies<\/li>\n<li>artificial arguers<\/li>\n<li>children and argument<\/li>\n<li>cognitive and social biases<\/li>\n<li>controversy<\/li>\n<li>critical thinking<\/li>\n<li>criticism<\/li>\n<li>debate<\/li>\n<li>diagramming<\/li>\n<li>dialogue logic, empirical logic, informal logic, \u2026<\/li>\n<li>dialogue types: deliberation, eristics, inquiry, negotiation, \u2026<\/li>\n<li>disagreement<\/li>\n<li>discourse analysis<\/li>\n<li>fallacies<\/li>\n<li>formal argumentation<\/li>\n<li>linguistic features<\/li>\n<li>normative pragmatics<\/li>\n<li>pedagogy<\/li>\n<li>persuasion research<\/li>\n<li>philosophy of argument<\/li>\n<li>power and argument<\/li>\n<li>probability and argument<\/li>\n<li>rhetoric<\/li>\n<li>social epistemology<\/li>\n<li>strategic manoeuvring<\/li>\n<li>stylistics<\/li>\n<li>virtues<\/li>\n<li>visual and multi-model argumentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>ECA FRANS VAN EEMEREN PRIZE<\/h6>\n<p>To encourage submissions from students and young scholars, ECA awards <strong>the Frans van Eemeren Prize for Outstanding Student Paper<\/strong>, sponsored by Springer: \u20ac 500 cash and additional \u20ac 300 in books from Springer\u2019s catalogue. Only submissions for Long Papers authored by a single young scholar (no PhD defended before 15 January 2022) are eligible for this prize: those interested to participate should make sure to check the corresponding box in the submission form. If the abstract is accepted, one should submit the full paper by 15 July 2022. The winner will be announced and the prize awarded at the end of the ECA Rome 2022, during the <em>social dinner<\/em>: the President of the Jury, <strong>Prof. Ulrike Hahn<\/strong>, will deliver the prize. Further details on the FvE prize, including the winners of past editions, are available on the ECA website.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>APPLY\u00a0TRAINING\u00a0SCHOOL<\/h6>\n<p>In the week preceding the ECA 2022 conference (<em>19-21 September 2022<\/em>) there will be an <strong>APPLY\u00a0Training\u00a0School at the University of Cagliari<\/strong>, organized by Francesca Ervas, Elisabetta Gola and Antonio Ledda, and sponsored by the <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>European Network for Argumentation and Public Policy Analysis\u00a0(<strong>APPLY<\/strong>). More information, including the\u00a0programme and how to apply to the training\u00a0school, will soon be made available from the dedicated page on the APPLY website (<a href=\"https:\/\/publicpolicyargument.eu\/training-schools\/\">https:\/\/publicpolicyargument.eu\/training-schools\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>APPLY CONFERENCE<\/h6>\n<p>In the days right before the ECA 2022 conference (<em>27-28 September 2022<\/em>) there will be a<strong>\u00a0conference of the European Network for Argumentation and Public Policy Analysis<\/strong> (APPLY, <a href=\"https:\/\/publicpolicyargument.eu\/\">https:\/\/publicpolicyargument.eu\/<\/a>), also hosted by the University of Roma Tre, whose last day will coincide with the first day of the ECA main event. More information will be soon be announced on the APPLY website.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>PUBLICATION<\/h6>\n<p>Authors of all accepted papers, including those in thematic panels, but excluding posters, as well as the keynote addresses will be invited to publish them in the <strong>conference proceedings<\/strong>. Proceedings will be published as a printed volume by <em>College Publications<\/em>, with authors being able to distribute their individual papers as open access.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>ABSTRACT SUBMISSION<\/h6>\n<p>We invite three types of original submissions, defined as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Long paper (with commentator)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Submit an extended abstract (min. 1000, max. 1500 words), ready for double-blind reviewing. Each accepted paper will then have to be submitted prior to the conference (see important dates below) and will have a commentator assigned. Authors will be allocated longer slots (approx. 45 min.). Published long papers will be within the 5000-7000 words range (incl. references and footnotes).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Regular paper (without commentator)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Submit a regular abstract (min. 300, max. 500 words) ready for double-blind reviewing. For authors of accepted regular papers there is no need to submit them in advance, and there will be no commentator. Authors will be allocated shorter slots (approx. 25 min.). Published regular papers will be within the 3500-5000 words range (incl. references and footnotes).<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Thematic panel\/symposium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A thematic panel\/symposium is expected to be related to the main theme of the conference. Panels should allow 3 to 5 speakers to present and will last between 90 and 150 min. They may include a panel respondent (panel organizer(s) or someone invited by the panel organizer(s)). Panel proposals are submitted by the panel organizer. They should be prepared for double-blind reviewing and include a title, a description of the panel, including its connection to the conference theme (300-500 words), the titles and abstracts of all contributions to the panel (300-500 words each) and the name of the respondent if applicable. Published panel\/symposium papers will be within the 3500-5000 words range (incl. references and footnotes). Please note that all abstracts in the panel\/symposium should also be individually submitted by their authors as \u2018Regular papers\u2019; when those individual contributions are being submitted,\u00a0 authors must include the sentence\u00a0\u201cMy paper is part of the thematic panel\/symposium&#8230;\u201d followed by the title of the symposium at the very beginning of the paper abstract. Please note that book panels should be submitted under this category.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas directly submitting\u00a0<strong>poster<\/strong>\u00a0proposals is not allowed, we expect to have an overabundance on high quality submissions, possibly exceeding the temporal boundaries of the conference programme; should that be the case, authors of eligible submissions with the lowest peer reviewing score will be offered the possibility to participate in the conference\u2019s poster session. Authors of submissions accepted only as poster will not be required to submit them in advance, and posters will neither be assigned a commentator nor published.
